WORLD ARABIC LANGUAGE DAY CELEBRATIONS – 17/01/2020

The Dept. of Arabic organized World Arabic Language Day celebrations on 17th January, 2020. The Chief Speaker of the programme was Dr. Syed Hasnain Akhtar, Asso. Prof., Dept. of Arabic, University of Delhi, delivered lecture on Contribution of Indian Scholars to promote Arabic Language & Literature. Through his detailed and enlivening lecture he brought to light that Arabic is an ancient classical language and its literature is quite rich as regards its philosophy and criticism Arabic Language has been included as official language of the UNO. He emphasized that scholars of Arabic from India have worked hard and contributed to the rich treasure of Arabic literature. Commenting on the historical evolution of the language, he said that Arabic has been spoken from early times in the Indian sub-continent when Arabi traders established trading links with India. Dr. Akhtar highlighted the contribution of Sufi scholars and their thoughts towards the
development of Arabic language and literature in India. Some of the prominent scholars and their works which he brought to light are – Maulana Shahabuddin Daulatabadi, Qazi Abdul Muqtadir Dehlvi, Ahmad Thanvi, Mumtaz Alami, Chiragh Dehalwi, a disciple of Hazrat Nizamuddin Chishti. He brought to light that Maulana Fazl-e-Haq Khairabadi wrote a book on Indian freedom struggle. Dr. Akhter praised the works of Amir Khusrou who was a master of three languages – Hindi, Arabic and Persian.

He was highly appreciative of the fact that school of Darul-Uloom Deoband is publishing many magazines & Journals in Arabic. Prominent News papers published are Al-Raid from Lucknow and Al-Dayi from Darul Uloom, Deoband.

The programme was also attended by Dr. Mahmood Mirza, Astt. Prof., Dept. of Arabic, University of Allahabad. He emphasized on the significance of Arabic language and its global relevance. He advised the students to learn standard Arabic and not get enmeshed in the colloquial language.

Earlier the guests were welcomed by the Principal, Dr. Yusufa Nafees highlighted that the Dept. of Arabic has been an integral part of the college since 1975, when it was established. She stressed on the fact that the college and the Dept. of Arabic is working to enhance the quality of teaching in Arabic and expand the horizons.

Dr. Siddeeqa Jabir, Assistant. Professor, Dept. of Arabic of the college presented the introductory note of the program. The vote of thanks was given by Dr. Nudrat Mahmood, Convener, Dept. of Arabic, Hamidia Girls’ Degree College. The programme was conducted by Dr. Siddeeqa Jabir.
