Department of Arabic, Hamidia Girls’ Degree College, Allahabad celebrated World Arabic Language Day – 18th December, 2018. A Special Lecture on ‘Arabic Language : Importance & Scope‘ was delivered by the Chief Guest, Dr. Sumama Faisal, Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Lucknow Campus.
The Chief Guest, Dr. Sumama Faisal congratulated the College for celebrating the Day. He said in the year, 1973 General Assembly “approved Arabic Language as an official UN Language”. He presented an outline of the topic under two heads – (i) Importance of Arabic and (ii) Opportunities available to learn Arabic Language. Speaking on the linguistic importance of the Arabic Language he said different scholars and linguists have given different definition of language. One definition of language given by Abul Fath Usman Ibn Jinni, a great Arabic
linguist and grammarian of 10 century AD defined language “as a bunch of sounds uttered by a nation to express their ideas and thoughts“. Arabic language has the capacity to adopt the different languages, even the scientific and technical terms. It is the only language which is advanced, complete and rich. Commenting on the historical importance of Arabic Language he said that Arabic is the mother of all seimatic languages. It has been in existence since very ancient times. It was the language of four prophets. Arabic is a language of the Holy Quran and as such it is a language selected by the Creator to address Prophet Mohammad (s.w.a.). Arabic Language has the quality to express precisely. It has influenced English, French and Spanish Language.
Talking about the opportunities available for the progress of Arabic Language he said that it is the most progressive language of the world and it is the official language of twenty five nations. The Arab League established in Cairo has also acknowledged it as its official language. The language has tremendous opportunities in the fields of teaching, translation and offers jobs as language experts in MNC’s.
Mrs. Tazeen Ahsanulla, Manager of the College and also the Presiding Authority of the programme congratulated the Dept. of Arabic for celebrating the Day. She said Arabic language is the language which offers the light of knowledge. Stressing on the point she said since the Holy Quran offers a solution to all problems, Arabic language has the guiding spirit. She was hopeful that the opportunities highlighted by the Chief Guest shall inspire and motivate students to move ahead and attain positions in life.
The program began with Qirat (recitation of verses from the Holy Quran). Thereafter floral welcome was accorded to the guests. The Principal of College, Dr. Yusufa Nafees welcomed the guests and she highlighted importance of the Day, 18th December – World Arabic Language Day. She said that UN Arabic Language Day is observed annually 18th December. The event has been established by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural organization (UNESCO) in 2010 seeking to celebrate multilinguistic and cultural diversity. It is for the first time that the Dept. of Arabic at the College is celebrating the day. She congratulated the Faculty for the initiative and said that the Special Lecture shall motivate the students to learn Arabic language and apply it for
developing understanding of other languages.
Dr. Siddeeqa Jabir, Assistant. Professor, Dept. of Arabic of the college presented the introductory note of the program. The vote of thanks was given by Dr. Nudrat Mahmood, Convener, Dept. of Arabic, Hamidia Girls’ Degree College. The programme was compered by Dr. Siddeeqa Jabir.
